Inspiring Start for Young Runners on The Hackney 2025 Schools’ Challenge

As part of the Hackney Moves festival, the Hackney Schools’ Challenge gives primary school children the opportunity to take part in a real sporting event, experience the atmosphere of a big race, and feel proud of their achievements.

In the weeks leading up to the event, participants cover 12 miles—running short distances at school, in PE lessons, or in the backyard. On the day of the event, during the festival weekend, they run the final mile, cross the finish line, and complete their own half marathon!

When and where?

The Hackney School Run will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, as part of the Hackney Moves Festival. Young participants will gather at Hackney Marshes, the centerpiece of the event, for an incredible atmosphere of music, entertainment, street food, and plenty of activities for the whole family.

How it works?

This program is designed to make running accessible and fun for kids of all fitness levels. In the weeks leading up to the race, kids accumulate 12 miles by running short distances at home or at school. And on May 17, they will run the last mile in front of an enthusiastic crowd of spectators, finishing like real athletes!

The Hackney Schools’ Challenge is not a race for speed but a celebration of movement and achievement. Every child will feel part of a great sporting event, break personal bests, and receive well-deserved applause.

What will the participants get?

Each child who completes the race will receive:

  • A personalized start number like the adult participants.
  • A Hackney Moves t-shirt to make them feel part of the sporting celebration.
  • A finisher’s medal, which will become a commemorative trophy.
  • A gift bag to enjoy after the race.
  • A day that will be memorable

On the day of the event, children start from the same line as the Hackney Half Marathon participants. They run through closed streets, cheered on by marshals and spectators. As they complete their last mile, they feel proud of themselves and the joy of being part of a great event.

Entry costs and registration

The cost to participate is £10 per child, which includes a start number, T-shirt, medal, and gift bag.

Important: Teachers and parents who wish to run with the school team participate for free.

The Hackney Schools’ Challenge is not just a sporting event but an opportunity for children to experience the joy of movement, learn to set goals, and take pride in their achievements. Whether it’s your child’s first time taking part or they already love running, the day will give them a great experience and confidence in their abilities.

The atmosphere of the Hackney Moves festival, lively emotions, and spectator support make this race truly unforgettable!
